Taking Care of Your Bamboo Products In Monsoon : A Guide by Silpakarman

The rainy season is here, and while it brings much-needed relief from the heat, it also poses a challenge when it comes to taking care of your bamboo products. Bamboo is a beautiful and sustainable material, but it requires a bit of extra care to keep it in top condition, especially during the monsoons. Here are some tips to help you protect your bamboo items and ensure their longevity:

1. Keep it dry: It may be noted that bamboo tends to support mould growth in case the surrounding environment is humid. Make sure to keep your bamboo items as dry as you can at all times. These require to be cleaned gently with a dry cloth if they get wet and should not be placed in direct sunlight but left to dry before storage.
2. Store in a cool, dry place: In case you are using any of the bamboo products ensure that you store them in clean, dry and well-aerated places. Appropriate places to store them should not contain moisture or humidity as this will lead to the formation of mold and mildew.
3. Regular cleaning: For general cleaning of your bamboo products, you should use warm water and mild detergents. Always make sure that these clothes are dried to the best of your ability before you store them. Common solvents such as bleach and other toxic chemicals should be discouraged because they stain the natural surface of the bamboo, and so should abrasive cleaning utensils and substances.
4. Oil treatment: Bamboo can be treated with natural oils for instance linseed oil or any other advisable oil to enhance the qualities of the product. These oils assist in making the surface of the bamboo waterproof which in turn helps in shielding it from water. Ensure that you rub the lotion on the skin and click off any excess that may be on the skin, ensuring the skin dries before you apply the oil.
5. Water-based sealants: When it comes to sealing the bamboo it is recommended to use a water-based sealant for bamboo since it is specifically made for bamboo. Some of these sealants can add further protection against the entry of moisture into the structure. Some brands come accompanied by instructions on how to apply and it is essential to follow these instructions to the letter, it is equally important to note whether the bamboo is clean or has some traces of moisture before applying.
6. Avoid direct contact with water: It will be helpful if you try to minimise the exposure of your bamboo products to direct and excessive amounts of water. For drinks, use coasters; if the bamboo cutlery is being used, ensure it is not left soaked in water for a very long time.
7. Monitor for mould: It is imperative to frequently inspect your bamboo items to identify any mould or mildew formation; ideally, do this on the underside of the surface or the backing of the fabric as these are generally the most concealed regions that take the longest to dry. If you come across some blots of mold, you should clean it right away using a mild detergent on water then gently brush with a small brush.
8. Proper ventilation: Make sure that the room or area where your bamboo products are stored or used should be well ventilated. Proper ventilation plays a vital role in combating the formation of moisture which leads to mold and mildew formation.
9. Use a dehumidifier: To prevent the formation of mould and mildew in your home, it is recommended for people in humid regions to use a dehumidifier to remove moisture in the air.
10. Regular maintenance: Such problems would however require more frequent care and maintenance within the rainy season for your bamboo products. Stay keen and you will find your bamboo creations lasting for many years to come.

Thus, with such advice, you will be able to avoid the negative impact of the rainy season and maintain the necessary longevity of your bamboo items. Looking after the bamboo items would mean having artistic and environment-friendly furniture even if the weather is harsh.
